Unmanned flight systems have developed in the last few years from "toys" to serious aids and tools in various industries. Starting from rather simple applications in the advertising and film industry ("flying camera"), drones are now used in very specialized areas, e.g. BOS (authorities and organizations with special tasks), but also in a wide range of surveying, monitoring and inspection tasks. For example, drones are used by roofers for the inspection or measurement of roof surfaces, in structural engineering they are used for example for construction progress control or in civil engineering for the volumetric measurement of excavations. Experts use drones to determine structural damage and in agriculture and forestry pest infestation or water shortage can be detected.

Against this background, "UFO" deals with the development and conception of target group-oriented further education and training measures, which are intended to systematically qualify specialists in the efficient use of unmanned flight systems for data acquisition and in the handling of software applications for the evaluation of process-relevant data.

The project is thus intended to make a significant contribution to the preparation and qualification of skilled workers and companies for the digital labor market, in which unmanned highly automated systems are already taking over important functions as tools. Furthmore novel software applications must be used to process the captured data. The employees are confronted with completely new topics and tasks in the companies, which are not taught to them in their traditional training, because they are not part of the existing curricula (IHKn, HWKn).

The development project serves the preparation of further education and training measures that enable skilled personnel to efficiently use unmanned flight systems as tools within the scope of their activities and that enable companies to efficiently integrate the novel tools and especially the data collected by them into their existing business processes or to derive optimized or even completely new business processes from the new possibilities that result from the use of these systems.

We see a particular social innovation in the fact that new cross-domain forms of cooperation arise in the course of the training measures; the specialists are not only familiarized with new technologies and techniques, but they also work closely with the respective experts (drones, simulation, VR, etc.), which additionally gives them new ways of seeing their projects and working environment.


The European Social Fund (ESF) is Europe's most important instrument for promoting employment. It promotes equal opportunities on the labor market, supports people in accessing better jobs and in vocational training and qualification.

In the state of Brandenburg, the ESF funding programs in the 2014-2020 funding period are aimed at improving employment opportunities and promoting education, securing skilled workers and integration into work.
